Artificial Intelligence in Perioperative Medicine: Where should we focus efforts?

The authors of this review article recommend 3 key areas where AI could be of benefit for improving patient care in the perioperative period.

1. Identifying patients at risk through dynamic risk prediction models
2. Early detection of complications through use of novel sensors and continuous monitoring
3. Institution of timely and effective treatment with decision support systems

Hurdles of course exist. These include acceptability of AI systmes by both doctors and patients, lack of robust clinical data, costs, narrow scope and lack of generalizability of AI systems. We still have a long way to go, much more to explore, discover and marvel about when it comes to AI in healthcare. An exiciting space in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine.
